Hocking Hills Information

Hocking Hills State Park offers 7 major hiking areas - Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Old Man's Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, Conkle's Hollow, Rock House and Lake Logan. Within these areas, there are over 25 miles of trails for the hiking enthusiast. From beaches to hiking trails, picnicking to rock climbing areas, there is something to do each day of the year. Park programs are offered all year long along with special events centering around the natural history of the region.

The major park regions are:

Ash Cave

An easy walk down a paved trail leads to the largest recess cave in Ohio.  It also features a misty waterfall.  Allow approximately 30 minutes to walk this trail.

Old Man’s Cave

One of Ohio’s most popular natural destinations features waterfalls, cliffs, bridges and rock tunnels.  Did I mention many stairs too?  Allow an hour or so to hike this trail.  Don’t forget to check out the Birds of Prey exhibit near the Welcome Center/Check-in Station.

Cedar Falls

Surrounded by Hemlocks, this trail leads you through a steep–walled gorge, beautiful valleys and beside a waterfall that plunges over a 50-foot cliff.  Allow approximately 30-40 minutes to hike this trail.

Lake Logan

Enjoy a scenic picnic along the shore, swim at the public beach on the north shore or rent a boat.  The lake also offers prime fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, northern pike and saugeye.  For winter fun, sledding, ice-skating and ice fishing is permitted.

Rock House

Hike the ½-mile trail through the only true cave in the park.  It is situated midway up a 150-foot cliff and has housed a variety of occupants over time including early settlers and Native Americans.  Allow about 30 minutes to hike the trail.

Cantwell Cliffs

A massive overhanging horseshow shaped cliff rewards hikers.  Allow about 90 minutes to hike this trail.  You will see a rock shelter, recess cave and large slump rocks.  Look out for “Fat Woman’s Squeeze” along the trail.

Conkle's Hollow

More experienced hikers will enjoy the rim trail while casual hikers may prefer the lower trail.  Allow 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the trail you select.  The gorge will provide you will views of sandstone cliffs, hemlocks and rock formations.  The shaded floor makes this a pleasant summer hike.  A rock climbing/rappelling area is available in the adjacent Hocking State Forest.
